Hillsborough Castle: Introduction

It is a Georgian country house in the village of Royal Hillsborough, County Down, built in the eighteenth century for the Hill family, Marquesses of Downshire. The distinction matters, because Hillsborough's story is less about fortification than about diplomacy -- the agreements signed within its walls, the conflicts negotiated in its drawing rooms, and the awkward political reality it has embodied since Northern Ireland's creation.
