Photo credit 663highland, CC BY 2.5. A ginkgo tree nearly 28 meters tall has been shedding golden leaves in this courtyard since before Charlemagne was crowned in Europe. Estimated at 1,250 years old and designated a National Natural Monument, it is the living heartbeat of Hida Kokubun-ji, a Buddhist temple tucked into downtown Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. This is one of the rarest survivors of a grand 8th-century experiment: Emperor Shomu's decree that a monastery and nunnery be built in every province across Japan, a spiritual network meant to unify an empire still reeling from a devastating smallpox epidemic.
