The name comes from a narrow break in the cliffs -- a gap in the volcanic rock walls so dramatic that early European explorers called it the gate to hell. Established in 1984, Hell's Gate National Park covers a compact stretch of Kenya's Great Rift Valley just south of Lake Naivasha, and it breaks nearly every rule visitors expect from an African game park. There are no large predators stalking the grasslands. No guide insists you stay in your vehicle. Instead, you rent a bicycle at the gate and pedal past giraffes, zebras, and warthogs that barely glance up from grazing, while Fischer's Tower -- a 25-meter volcanic plug left standing after softer rock eroded away -- rises from the valley floor like a ruined cathedral spire.
