The only comparable case in European football is the Stade Felix Bollaert in Lens, France, another small industrial town that punches improbably above its weight. Heerenveen earned the nickname 'Het Friese Haagje', the little Frisian Hague, in the nineteenth century when wealthy merchants started building country houses here.
