The room where Christiaan Barnard's team transplanted a human heart for the first time on 3 December 1967 is preserved in the old main building of Groote Schuur Hospital, its original layout intact, its green-tiled walls and overhead lights exactly as they were the night a 25-year-old woman's heart was placed in a 54-year-old grocer's chest. The Heart of Cape Town Museum opened on 3 December 2007, the fortieth anniversary of the transplant, and its power lies in its specificity. This is not a reconstruction. These are the rooms. That is the table. The surgery happened here.
