"A spectacle, sublime and even appalling, presented itself before us," he later wrote. "We stopped and trembled." Two centuries later, visitors still tremble. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is one of the few places on Earth where you can watch the planet build itself in real time, where molten rock pours from vents and cools into new land while you stand close enough to feel the heat on your face. The park spans 354,461 acres on the Big Island's southeastern flank, stretching from sea level to the 13,679-foot summit of Mauna Loa, the most massive active volcano on Earth. Within that range, climates shift from lush tropical rainforest to the barren Ka'u Desert, a surreal moonscape of ash and wind-scoured rock.
