Harpers Ferry: Introduction

Photo credit Our special artist, Public domain. On the night of October 16, 1859, John Brown led 21 men in a raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. His plan was audacious: seize the weapons, arm enslaved people in the surrounding countryside, and spark a slave rebellion that would spread across the South. The raid failed. Local militia pinned down the raiders. U.S. Marines, commanded by Colonel Robert E. Lee, stormed the engine house where Brown made his last stand. Ten of Brown's men died, including two of his sons. Brown was tried, convicted of treason, and hanged on December 2, 1859. He had failed to start a slave rebellion. But he had succeeded in terrifying the South and inspiring the North. His execution made him a martyr. Within eighteen months, the nation would be at war, and Union soldiers would march singing 'John Brown's Body.' Harpers Ferry, where two rivers meet at the edge of the Blue Ridge, became the place where the Civil War truly began.
