Harbour Island, Bahamas: Introduction

Not metaphorically pink, not sunset-trick-of-the-light pink, but the actual color of a conch shell's inner lip, spread across three miles of Atlantic-facing shoreline. The source of that color is a creature called foraminifera, a single-celled organism no bigger than a grain of sand, whose reddish-pink shell breaks down and mixes with white coral and crushed limestone to produce what may be the most photographed beach in the Bahamas. Harbour Island sits off the northeast tip of Eleuthera, barely three and a half miles long, reachable only by water taxi from North Eleuthera after a flight into the small airport there. It is one of the Out Islands, meaning it exists beyond the tourist gravity of Nassau and Paradise Island. That remoteness is precisely the point.
