Photo credit DirectCutter at English Wikipedia, Public domain. Josiah Whitney, head of the California Geological Survey, looked up at Half Dome in the 1870s and declared it "perfectly inaccessible." George Anderson looked up at the same rock in October 1875 and disagreed. Anderson had already tried everything - different shoes, different routes, pine pitch smeared on his soles for extra grip. Nothing worked on the smooth quartz monzonite. So he started drilling. Hole by hole, he hammered iron eye bolts into the stone, climbing a ladder of his own creation up the steep eastern face. When he reached the 8,800-foot summit, he became the first person known to stand on top of what the Ahwahneechee people called Tis-sa-ack - Cleft Rock. Anderson then strung ropes through his bolts so others could follow. Within a year, S. L. Dutcher of San Francisco became the first woman to make the climb. By 1877, James Mason Hutchings was leading parties that included his daughter, his son, and his 65-year-old mother-in-law. The perfectly inaccessible had become a family outing.
