At Hahoe, the Nakdong River bends so dramatically around a sandy peninsula that the water nearly meets itself, enclosing a village shaped -- according to the principles of pungsu, Korean geomancy -- like a lotus flower floating on the current. The Ryu clan of Pungsan has lived here since the 15th century, and they live here still, in tile-roofed manor houses and thatched-roof cottages that preserve the architecture of the Joseon Dynasty with a fidelity that earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2010. A million visitors come each year. The village absorbs them the way it absorbs everything: slowly, on its own terms.
