More than 3,000 steel steps climbed the spine of Oahu's Ko'olau Range, switchbacking through clouds toward a ridge that overlooked Kaneohe Bay on one side and Haiku Valley on the other. The views were transcendent. The access was illegal. And the tension between those two facts -- between beauty that demanded to be seen and a structure too dangerous and disruptive to open -- eventually consumed the stairs entirely. In April 2024, the city began dismantling them.
