The smallest porpoise on Earth, found nowhere else, is vanishing from waters that otherwise constitute one of the planet's richest marine ecosystems. That tension defines the Gulf of California: extraordinary biological abundance colliding with the human pressures that threaten to unravel it. Jacques Cousteau called this body of water "the world's aquarium," and the name stuck because it is, improbably, accurate.
