Passengers who arrived that morning - blinking at the West Coast light after hours of Southern Alps tunnels and viaducts - have had just enough time to walk the river esplanade, eat lunch, and understand why this small town at the mouth of the Grey River has outlasted every boom and bust the coast has thrown at it. The Maori called this place Mawhera, meaning 'wide-spread river mouth,' and the name still fits. Everything about Greymouth spreads from that river.
