Multiply that by 2.3 million blocks, add 8,000 tonnes of granite floated down the Nile from Aswan, and you begin to understand why the Great Pyramid of Giza held the title of tallest human-made structure on Earth for thirty-eight centuries. Originally rising 146.6 meters -- roughly the height of a modern forty-eight-story building -- and sheathed in polished white Tura limestone that would have blazed in the desert sun, Khufu's tomb was not merely large. It was a statement about the relationship between a pharaoh, the sun, and eternity.
