The cave that would one day bear Captain Gorham's name opened onto a landscape of woodland and grassland, and the Neanderthals who sheltered here could hunt on plains that are now seabed. Today the waves lap just meters from the entrance, and the cave on the southeastern face of the Rock of Gibraltar preserves one of the most extraordinary archaeological records in Europe -- a place where our closest evolutionary cousins made their last stand.
