Twenty-five years later, in 1996, the name was stripped away and replaced with a word from the Khoekhoe language: Gariep, meaning 'river.' It was the original name of the Orange River itself, South Africa's longest, and the choice was deliberate -- a dam named not for a politician, but for the water it holds. Today, the Gariep Dam remains the largest reservoir in South Africa, an 88-meter wall of concrete and ambition straddling the border between the Free State and the Eastern Cape.
