The bubbles are carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide rising from vents in the lake bed, a reminder that this is not a lake in the ordinary sense. It is the world's largest hot spring, filling a volcanic crater in New Zealand's Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley, and the plumbing beneath it is still very much active.]]></description>
