Photo credit CC BY-SA 3.0. Read a map of the Frisian Lakes and you will see every body of water twice. Sneekermeer, Snitser Mar. Tjeukemeer, Tsjûkemar. Heegermeer, Hegemer Mar. Slotermeer, Sleattemer Mar. The first is the Dutch name, the second the West Frisian, and on the signs around the marinas and bridges both forms appear together. Twenty-four lakes laid out across central and southwestern Friesland, linked by canals and skippered by everyone from grandparents to teenagers who learned to handle a tiller before they could drive. The rest of the Netherlands knows this place. The rest of the world barely does.
