Heegermeer, Hegemer Mar. Slotermeer, Sleattemer Mar. The first is the Dutch name, the second the West Frisian, and on the signs around the marinas and bridges both forms appear together. Twenty-four lakes laid out across central and southwestern Friesland, linked by canals and skippered by everyone from grandparents to teenagers who learned to handle a tiller before they could drive. The rest of the Netherlands knows this place. The rest of the world barely does.]]></description>
