Photo credit Ebyabe, CC BY-SA 3.0. Confederate soldiers stationed at Camp Walton in 1861 decided to dig into the massive earthen mound towering above their encampment. What they pulled from the soil unsettled them: human remains bearing the unmistakable marks of violence, skulls and limb bones scarred by hacking and blunt force. They had stumbled into what may have been a charnel house, a place where the dead were prepared for burial by a civilization that had vanished centuries before any European set foot on the Florida Panhandle. The Fort Walton Mound, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, stands today in the heart of Fort Walton Beach as one of the most significant pre-Columbian sites in the southeastern United States.
