Grant sent those words to the Confederate commanders inside Fort Donelson on February 16, 1862, he was a relative nobody -- a former Army officer who had resigned under a cloud and spent years selling firewood in St. Louis. By nightfall, he had captured an entire Confederate army, opened the Cumberland River to Union invasion, and earned the nickname "Unconditional Surrender" Grant. The war in the West would never be the same.
