On March 13, 2018, an engineer from the Florida Department of Transportation tried to reach a colleague about alarming cracks spreading through a brand-new pedestrian bridge at Florida International University. The recipient was away and would not hear the message until after the bridge had already fallen. Two days later, on March 15, the 950-ton concrete span collapsed onto Southwest 8th Street -- the Tamiami Trail -- crushing eight cars stopped at a red light beneath it. Six people died: five motorists and one construction worker. The bridge that was supposed to save lives by carrying students safely over a dangerous intersection instead became one of the deadliest structural failures in modern Florida history.]]></description>
