Once, around 540 million years ago, the Flinders Ranges stood as a soaring new range thrust up by colliding crust; ever since, wind and water have been wearing them down to the long, quartzite-ribbed spine that runs north from near Adelaide for more than 400 kilometres. What remains is not height but depth - depth of time, depth of story. This is the largest range in South Australia, the homeland of the Adnyamathanha people for tens of thousands of years, and the place where the rock itself preserved the dawn of animal life. Few landscapes hold so much in so little elevation.
