That detail, from the first-hand account of relief keeper Joseph Moore, is somehow the most unsettling part of the story. On 26 December 1900, Moore was put ashore alone on Eilean Mor, the largest of the Flannan Isles, twenty miles west of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. He found the entrance gate closed, the main door shut, the beds unmade, and the clock unwound. The lamps had been cleaned and refilled. A set of oilskins hung on its peg, suggesting that one of the three keepers had left the lighthouse without waterproofs. Of the men themselves -- Thomas Marshall, James Ducat, and Donald McArthur -- there was no sign. There never would be.
