These simple stones mark a collision of three conflicts in one remote canyon: the American Civil War, the Apache Wars, and the ongoing struggle for control of the Southwest. When Chiricahua warriors under Cochise ambushed a Confederate patrol at Dragoon Springs, they created a historical footnote that defies easy categorization. It was the westernmost point where Confederate soldiers died in combat, yet their killers were not Yankees but Apache warriors defending their homeland.
