Photo credit Diliff, Papa Lima Whiskey (edit), CC BY-SA 3.0. From the air it looks like an arrowhead the size of a small mountain, pointing inland from the sea near the southern tip of Madagascar. The Fenambosy Chevron rises some 180 meters high and sits about five kilometers from the water, one of four such wedge-shaped formations along this stretch of coast. For a few years it carried an astonishing claim on its back: that it was the high-water mark of a catastrophe, sediment flung inland by a wall of ocean tall enough to bury cities. Whether that story is true is one of the genuinely open arguments in Earth science.
