This flat, sandy island sits just 20 kilometers off the coast of Kuwait City, close enough to see the mainland skyline, yet separated by enough water to have developed its own layered identity. Sumerians knew it. Babylonian kings built palaces on it. Alexander the Great renamed it. And in 1990, Iraqi troops invaded it, expelled every resident, mined its beaches, and used its buildings for target practice. Failaka has been occupied, abandoned, excavated, and fought over more times than most nations.
