At its top sits the world's largest light bulb - a 13-foot, 8-ton replica that glows each evening. This is the Thomas Edison Memorial Tower, marking the site of the Menlo Park laboratory where Edison and his team invented the practical incandescent light bulb in 1879, along with the phonograph, improved telegraph systems, and dozens of other innovations. But Edison's most important invention may have been the laboratory itself - the world's first industrial research facility, where teams of specialists worked systematically to solve problems and create new products. The modern R&D lab, from Bell Labs to Silicon Valley, traces its ancestry to this New Jersey hillside.
