Warriors from Mattau and Soulang ambushed the column and killed every last soldier. For six years afterward, the Dutch East India Company stewed in its fortress at Tayouan, modern-day Anping in Tainan, too weak to retaliate against the most powerful aboriginal villages in southwestern Formosa. The massacre exposed a humiliating truth: after more than a decade on the island, the VOC controlled almost nothing beyond its walls.]]></description>
