Three partitions in twenty-three years had divided the once-vast Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth among Russia, Prussia, and Austria, leaving nothing of a country that had stretched from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Then in 1807, twelve years later, Napoleon Bonaparte handed the Poles a fragment of their lost nation back. The Duchy of Warsaw was small, dependent, and obviously a French satellite - but it was Polish, and for the first time in a generation a child could be born under a flag her grandparents would have recognized. It lasted exactly eight years.]]></description>
