Between the 1950s and 1990s, the Mesopotamian Marshes -- 20,000 square kilometers of wetlands where the Tigris and Euphrates rivers spread into a vast inland delta -- were systematically drained. What had sustained human habitation since before the Sumerians became desert. The Marsh Arabs, the Ahwaris, who had lived in this waterworld for millennia, were driven from their homes. By 2000, ninety percent of the marshlands had disappeared. The stated reasons were agriculture and mosquito control. The real motive, after 1991, was revenge.
