The McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32, registration HI-177, had been in service for less than a month. It had logged only 354 flying hours. At approximately 6:30 PM, it lifted off from Las Americas International Airport, climbed briefly into the Caribbean twilight, and two minutes later was gone.]]></description>
