Photo credit Mti, CC BY-SA 3.0. According to local legend, an injured egret discovered the spring. The heron soaked its wounded leg in the hot water day after day until it healed, then flew away. Watching this, the people of Dogo tried the waters themselves and found them restorative. The story is probably apocryphal, but the spring is certainly ancient -- Dogo Onsen appears in the Man'yoshu, Japan's oldest poetry anthology compiled around 759 CE, and tradition holds that Prince Shotoku himself bathed here in the sixth century. More than a thousand years of continuous use makes Dogo Onsen one of the oldest hot springs in Japan, and its Victorian-era bathhouse one of the country's most recognizable buildings.
