No inscription names the king who ordered their construction. No chronicle records the architects or the laborers who cut and stacked the stone. When local Javanese villagers needed something to call these small, ancient shrines standing in the mist of a volcanic plateau, they reached for the heroes of the Mahabharata - Arjuna, Bima, Gatotkaca, Srikandi - and gave each temple a name borrowed from epic poetry. The names stuck, even though the temples have nothing to do with those stories. It is a fitting origin for structures that are themselves a kind of beginning: the oldest known standing stone buildings in Central Java.
