To the Mạ people, the indigenous inhabitants of this part of the Central Highlands, it was Djiring — a name that predates the French arrival, predates the colonial administrative apparatus, predates the road that now runs through it. To everyone else today, it is Di Linh, the spelling that French colonial administrators settled on when they made this place the center of their Đồng Nai Thượng region on 1 November 1899. That the original name survives in official use at all is a small but meaningful continuity — an acknowledgment that the highlands had a history before any outsider arrived to administer it.
