That single fact, recovered from a human skull buried under the ash of ancient fires, makes the Cave of the Cyclops one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. It opens in the limestone cliff of Youra, also spelled Gioura, an uninhabited islet roughly 20 miles from Alonnisos, about 150 meters above the present waterline. The cave takes its name from the myth of the one-eyed giant, but the story written into its floor is older and stranger than any legend.
