Cuandixia: Introduction

It means "cooking stove," and it is so rare that when the People's Republic simplified thousands of Chinese characters in 1958, this one was left untouched -- there was simply no point in streamlining a word that almost nobody used. Most Chinese resort to writing approximations of the name, substituting simpler characters that sound close enough. But the village itself, tucked into a mountain fold 90 kilometres northwest of central Beijing, has resisted simplification with the same quiet stubbornness. Its 500 courtyard homes still stand in the style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, and every family living among them still carries the surname Han.
