Photo credit mym, CC BY-SA 2.0. Somewhere in the church at Crowland Abbey sits a human skull. It belonged to Abbot Theodore, killed at the altar by Vikings in the 9th century. The relic was on public display until someone stole it from its case in 1982. Seventeen years later, it reappeared -- returned anonymously, no questions answered. It is a fitting mystery for a place built on layers of enigma: a forged chronicle, disputed bell-ringing firsts, and a monastery founded by a hermit who came to a waterlogged Lincolnshire island in 699 seeking solitude and found, instead, a legacy that would last more than thirteen centuries.
