Corvin Castle: Introduction

It is an odd name for a tower in a fortress that once imprisoned Vlad the Impaler. Corvin Castle rises from a rock above the Zlasti River in Hunedoara, Romania, a Gothic-Renaissance sprawl of tall towers, bastions, colored roofs, and stone-carved balconies that ranks among the largest castles in Europe. Its builders, the Hunyadi family, took their later name Corvinus from the raven on their coat of arms. Inside the castle's Mantle wing, a painting still depicts the legend: a raven carrying a golden ring, the origin story of a dynasty that shaped the fate of medieval Hungary.
