Derived from the Caquetio word curiana -- "place of winds" -- the name Coro announces what the city has endured for nearly five centuries: relentless trade winds that sculpt the Medanos dunes to the north, hurricanes that flattened entire neighborhoods in the 1600s, and the slower gusts of political upheaval that have swept across Venezuela from independence to the present day. Founded in 1527 as Santa Ana de Coro, this is the second-oldest city in Venezuela, and its colonial streets hold a story that is as layered and unpredictable as the wind patterns that named it.
