Photo credit Rubyk at English Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 2.5. The bald cypress trees at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary have been standing since before Columbus sailed. Some of them were already old when the Calusa paddled through these waters. Their buttressed trunks, draped in Spanish moss and resurrection fern, rise from tea-dark water into a canopy so dense it dims the subtropical sun to a cathedral gloom. This is not a reconstructed wilderness or a symbolic remnant. The sanctuary, managed by the National Audubon Society in Collier County north of Naples, protects one of the largest remaining old-growth bald cypress forests in North America -- a living relic of the vast swamp systems that once covered much of the Florida peninsula.
