Fifty miles northwest of San Francisco, the ocean floor rises sharply from the continental shelf, and a granite mountain climbs to within 115 feet of the surface without ever breaking it. Cordell Bank is an island that nobody can see -- a submerged seamount so rich with life that blue whales travel thousands of miles from their breeding grounds in Mexico and Central America just to feed here. The California Current sweeps cold, nutrient-dense water upward along its flanks, fueling an explosion of krill that draws some of the largest and rarest creatures in the Pacific. Protected as a National Marine Sanctuary since 1989, the bank is a reminder that the most extraordinary landscapes are sometimes the ones hidden beneath the waves.
