Fed by the wandering channels of Cooper Creek, the Coongie Lakes spread across the floodplain as a maze of lakes, billabongs, deltas and swamps trapped between red sand dunes. The contrast is almost impossible to believe: sapphire water and green reed beds laced through a furnace of sand and gibber. This is one of the most pristine arid-zone wetland systems on the planet, and when the floods come, it erupts with life.
