For decades, the most reliable thing about the desert around Coober Pedy was also its most expensive. The sun beat down on a town where most people lived underground to escape it, while the lights and the air conditioning ran entirely on diesel - fuel trucked hundreds of kilometres up the Stuart Highway, then burned to keep a remote opal-mining settlement alive.
