Hidden inside a merchant's residence on Rasteh Koocheh Street, just steps from the Grand Bazaar of Tabriz, a small machine cranked out underground newspapers that challenged the absolute power of the Qajar shah. The men who gathered here in the early 1900s knew the stakes. Sattar Khan, a former horse trader who would become commander of the constitutionalist forces. Bagher Khan, his lieutenant. Seqat-ol-Eslam Tabrizi. Haji Mirza Aqa Farshi. And the owner of the house himself, Haji Mehdi Kuzeh Kanaani, a bazaar merchant so respected that people called him Abolmele -- Father of the Nation. This two-story Qajar-era building, constructed in 1868, became the unlikely headquarters of Iran's first democratic revolution.
