Each hairpin on the RN 5 from Saint-Louis descends deeper into a volcanic crater 11 kilometers across, its floor sitting at 1,200 meters above sea level, its walls rising in sheer basalt ramparts that catch clouds and shed waterfalls. The name itself carries a story: Cilaos derives from the Malagasy word Tsilaosa, meaning roughly "the place you never leave" or "a place where you are safe." The first people to test that promise were not tourists. They were enslaved people running for their lives.
