At the spring and autumn equinoxes, shadows cast by the pyramid's tiers create a pattern on the northern stairway that resembles a snake slithering down to the serpent head carved at the base. The Maya built this optical illusion a thousand years ago, aligning their pyramid precisely to create the effect. It's a reminder that the civilization we call 'mysterious' achieved sophisticated mathematics, astronomy, and architecture while Europe was still in the Dark Ages. Chichen Itza's ruins preserve what the Spanish conquest and jungle nearly erased: evidence of a great civilization that saw time as sacred.
