Together they dominate an ecoregion that spans most of Turkmenistan and eastern Uzbekistan, a territory so arid that annual precipitation ranges from 70 to 150 millimeters. Yet this is not empty land. Beneath the apparent monotony of sand and scrub, the Central Asian southern desert supports one of the highest concentrations of endemic reptile and insect species of any sandy desert on Earth.
