Photo credit Krzysztof Golik, CC BY-SA 4.0. The platform was supposed to hold people safely above a 40-metre chasm where Cave Creek emerges from the limestone karst of Paparoa National Park. It was built in April 1994 by Department of Conservation workers who were not qualified engineers, using nails where the design called for bolts because nobody had brought a drill to the site. A warning sign limiting occupancy to five people had been ordered but never installed. A building consent had never been obtained. On 28 April 1995, when 18 people walked to the edge together, the platform tipped forward into the void.
