When the Castanhão Dam was under construction in the late 1990s, federal regulators required the state to create, somewhere nearby, a protected area that would compensate for what the reservoir destroyed. What emerged in 2001, by federal decree on 27 September, was the Castanhão Ecological Station - 12,579 hectares of caatinga vegetation tucked to the south of the dam itself. It is categorized IUCN Ia, strict nature reserve, the highest level of protection Brazilian law affords. It exists, in other words, precisely because the reservoir does.]]></description>
