That single line from the National Trust's records tells you everything about Carrick-a-Rede. The rope bridge spans just 20 metres, connecting the Antrim mainland to a tiny island of volcanic rock 30 metres above the churning sea. It is not the distance that unnerves people but the height, the wind, and the undeniable fact that you are suspended on wire rope and Douglas fir planks above basalt columns and white water. Nearly half a million visitors crossed in 2018 alone. Not all of them walked back.
